Alaska is the largest state in the nation. At more than 586,000 square miles, it is roughly one-fifth the size of the Lower 48, nearly three times the size of Texas, and more than 47,000 miles of coastal shoreline.

The Bristol Bay region comprises roughly 40 million acres, or about 1 percent of the state. Within the BBNC region, Pedro Bay Corporation is entitled to 92,000 acres of surface estate to be managed for economic opportunity and growth for our more than 170 shareholders.

Pedro Bay Land and Natural Resources

The goal of the Pedro Bay Department of Land and Natural Resources is to benefit our shareholders through sound land management practices, maintain ownership and control of our lands and resources, and preserve our culture and heritage.

As stewards of the land and resources, we work to maintain a balance between development and conservation of the area’s natural character. Pedro Bay relies on science and research to make the best-informed decisions regarding the use of our lands.

While Pedro Bay has developed some timber and mineral resources, much of our land remains in a wild and untouched state. We will continue to employ sound land management practices and conservation principles to maintain our lands for subsistence and natural processes while providing economic opportunities for shareholders. It is fitting that the resources developed in Pedro Bay benefit the Pedro Bay shareholders.

Pedro Bay holds title to full fee and surface estates within the boundaries of Pedro Bay. The presence of wild and pristine places in the Pedro Bay region is critical to Pedro Bay shareholders and their heritage, as are areas that remain available for responsible development.

Pebble Mine Project

Pedro Bay Corporation is also closely watching efforts on the proposed Pebble mine. In June 2014, the PBC Board of Directors passed a resolution committing to the responsible care of the land and natural resources of Pedro Bay. The resolution reaffirms PBC will be actively engaged in the Pebble mine project permitting process as a responsible leader and advocate for our shareholders.

Bristol Bay Native Corporation’s Land Department provides impartial, educational information about the proposed Pebble mine through the Pebble Watch program. Find updates on the Pebble Watch website and Facebook page.
